I’ve been eating these cookies, an old family recipe of my gramma’s, at Christmastime for my entire life. It yields the crispiest of sugar cookies: sandy textured but tender with a gorgeous pale-golden hue that begs for a smattering of colored sugar at holiday time.

Makes 3 dozen cookies

2½ cups all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon cream of tartar

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup vegetable oil

1 large egg, at room temperature

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup confectioners’ sugar

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

¼ cup Vanilla Sugar

Coarse rainbow sugar or other decorative sugar, for sprinkling
